Fall 2005 SYLLABUS

COURSE DESCRIPTION
In this class, you will be examining the visual elements and principles artists use as they create the illusion of three dimensions on a flat, two-dimensional surface in black and white with various mediums/media. You will learn how to draw objects within a space using shape, line, composition, scale, perspective, volume, value and texture. We will explore 3 genres; still life, landscape, and portraits. You will also learn to execute drawings from preliminary sketches to finished product and develop skills in evaluating your work and the work of others.
ATTENDANCE
Regular attendance is required. Our studio time is very important in learning and practicing drawing concepts. Only two (2) unexcused absences will be permitted. A third class missed will result in your final grade being lowered 10% (zero classes missed will raise your final grade by 10%). Three late arrivals or early departures will count as one absence. Legitimate excuses for absences are due, in writing or email, no later than one week after the class missed. 15 classes missed= automatic failure* Please be prepared for each class; do not expect to borrow materials from other students or myself. If you do miss class, refer to the website calendar for class and homework. You are responsible for what was covered in class.
GRADING
Projects and homework assignments will be “checked”.( /+ =95, / =80, /- =65)You will be graded on the following: the amount of work and time that you apply to each project, the handling of the medium and materials, neatness, presentation, creativity, and your ability to follow directions. You may rework and resubmit assignments once for a better grade. Just because an assignment was resubmitted does not guarantee that it will receive a higher grade. All resubmitted assignments are due by 11.30.05. Late assignments are not eligible for resubmission. There will be a Midterm and Final Portfolio review. Your Midterm Grade will be determined by averaging your checked assignments, portfolio review and sketchbook grade. There will be a Final Critique of your Final Project during exam week; there are no exemptions from this Final Critique! Your Final Grade will be determined by averaging your checked assignments, sketch book grade, Midterm grade, Final Portfolio and Final Project grade.
(What the letters REALLY mean: A= Excellent, B= Above Average, C= Average, D= Below Average, F= Failure)

You will have a chance to get an A if you; come to every class, come to class on time, come to class prepared, work on the assigned project during class and stay the entire class, hand in each assignment, hand in each assignment completed to the best of your ability, hand in each assignment on the day it is due, resubmit any assignment that does not receive a /+ on the first attempt, draw in your sketch book daily, participate in class discussions and field trips, obey book club rules, turn in a complete midterm portfolio, turn in a complete final portfolio, show up to the final critique with a final project, and smile.

Sketch Book: Draw or glue something in your sketchbook everyday! I will check these randomly, so bring it with you every class!
Book Club: Bring in a drawing book from the SUNY Oneonta Library on the day your group in indicated on the class calendar. Participation= "checked" projects.
